    Good explanation, but you forgot something important. When you use the mirror compass you do it the right way with the mirror about 45°, but you forgot to align the centerline in the mirror over the center of the compass. So you can eliminated som parallax errors and augmented the accuracy of the measurement.

    One night walking my dog in our local park I used the stars (Southern Cross) to orient myself and find my way home. This is in a park I walk every day. Basically I had chased the dog chasing some kangaroos and found myself in a vale or dip I hadn't ever been in before. The Southern Cross allowed me to orient myself and know which direction to head in to get to somewhere I could see my way home from. Simple but effective.

    That material is not innovative just like goretex isn't. It is just a standard 2.5 layer raincoat with a fleese Liner. Which obviously performs about the same as a gortex based solution in some cercomdtances except that sometimes but not always the gortex might be able to evacuate swead faster. On the other side you have something like a parmo which has a very different set of performance charatarisics. Where it will be both dry and breadable under nearly alll circumstances, but only if you're body is hot and the environment is cold.

    Also, when properly navigating out in the wilds, you should also compare feature that we see with features marked on the map. Often we can 'catch' our mistakes by seeing something in the real world and wonder if we should have seen it, and how was it indicated in the map and why hadn't we noticed. Or vice versa. It's quite common when in a car looking at a high resolution map, you pass features (e.g.lane ends) and don't see them, and then miscount where the third lane on the left actually is, and like wise you hadn't noticed a lone barn on the map but it's obvious across the fields, and by that continuous comparison you realise that you now know that you missed the lane and should turn at the next lane end.

    There are two types of escape routes. Those for when you know where you are, and then those when you aren't sure where you are . For the latter case the escape routes should include a measure of ensuring that it's safe, despite the 'lost' aspects. Sometimes the escape route has to be deliberately 'long' to pick up collecting and catching features! Had a case of a colleague ending up with an 8 hour (into the night) exit after being misplaced on the Cairngorms (Moine Mhor)

    Why… why… does the water need to reach the first level before utilizing, you’re repeating others - not explaining

    • @TheBushcraftPadawan
      @TheBushcraftPadawan Місяць тому

      @@coreopolis I have explained this in another 'brown bag' video. It is to give it time for any water that is on the *outside* of the bag (assuming you've used the bag to scoop the water) to run off. If you didn't allow his to happen you'd not only be collecting water that has filtered from inside the bag but also unfiltered water from outside the bag. A question for you... Why did you have to pose your question in such a snarky way?

  • @user-vg6pj2my2n

    Three other uses: 1. You are visiting an area with no bathroom and you really have to go. Insta- shelter and a small shovel or sealable container. We carry an old plastic Folgers coffee can. Right now only used in our van for emergencies, but this bag brings new alternatives. 2. You are out hiking and want shelter from the elements to make yourself a cup of tea. 3. You are neurodivergent and at a public gathering and are feeling way too stimulated and need an instant privacy room.

    @philipoakley5498 Місяць тому

    In addition, when one looks at the map, 'it' should also be telling you the the 'opposites', such as the 'if you reach the big roundabout you've gone too far' style information. The map should also be used to tell you the those 'collecting features' you don't want, such as reaching a cliff line, or a sudden steeping, or slope falling away to the left [or right]. That 'opposites' part is really useful if you think you are sort of lost, when really you are just slightly misplaced, but are looking for a safe route out given what you know, and the safe collecting features that you can find. (Wind direction is another useful feature if 'lost', as it helps orient you - it rarely shifts 180 degrees in just a fey meters, rather you've just walked in a circle - Crinkle Crags in mist!).

    I was wondering why people don't put the sleeping mat under the tent floor. If you have one of these shelters you can wrap it up in that. An advantage of having the mattress under the tent's floor is that it it helps stop puncturing the floor. If the floor fails it keeps it up off the ground and there is less likelihood of water getting in. Just a thought.

      Ash does not block the bottom, it falls away under the stove, in fact, the stove is so efficient that there is very little ash residue in comparison to a typical open fire. I couldn't comment on whether there is a better position for the air holes.

If the knife is placed at the rear of your knee joint and then kneel down, the knife is held firmly with the butt poking out for you to strike against with your good arm.

    I have been putting my Kymit half pad inside my sleeping bag. It stays put, but it’s a bit of a trick to get in position as where you want it head and shoulders wise. I also use a silk liner that I slip into then slip into my bag. It has a pillow case build in, so a sweater folded up works great as a pillow.
